Barnes & Noble.com Re-Designed: Adds Some Web 2.0 Elements, But Still Far Behind Amazon.com

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#news#web richard macmanus A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Joe Wikert has a nice review of the re-design, noting that it is “disappointing to see that B&N’s page has nothing to offer on the widget front.” Indeed check our recent review of Random House’s widget and web services program to see what B&N could have done. Wikert also says it is light on customization options.Barnes&Noble has a long way to go to catch up with Amazon.com, the online book store market leader – in both sales and innovation. Also Borders recently announced a beta design, which Joe Wikert has info on (I found a great new feed tonight, subscribed Joe!).Overall, a lot of nice new functionality in the new B&N – but it’s still far from Amazon.com’s level. No recommendation technology, no widgets, no web services, no RSS, little customization. Still, it has some nice multimedia and uses many of the UI elements popularized by Amazon.com (e.g. wishlists). Its current user base will be pleased, although there doesn’t seem to be much to attract new users. Barnes & Noble.com has launched a re-design, with several new web 2.0 features – including “One on One” podcasts, a large tag cloud on the frontpage, a “See Inside” program that offers a virtual book-reading like experience, and a service called “Live at Barnes & Noble” where you can view webcasts of readings at member stores. Another new feature is B&N Review, a daily magazine with reviews and interviews. The goal of the re-design was to add more “motion”, as well as more content, interactivity, and community. The AP report also noted that Barnes & Noble.com “has become increasingly important to Barnes & Noble Inc. […] The online seller’s percentage of the superstore’s total sales have doubled in the past five years to 10 percent.” Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Intel® Xeon® Processor 5600 and 7500 Series: Driving Changes for BMW Cuts Energy Use by 20%

first_imgTo meet its corporate goals, BMW Group needed to cut carbon emissions and energy use in its data center and make the applications and operations more efficient. It also wanted to develop a larger virtual environment for key applications to lower management costs.Based on its long relationship with Intel, BMW Group tested the new Intel® Xeon® processors 5600 and 7500 series. Moving away from its existing RISC-based platform to the x86 architecture enabled more efficient power usage and increased performance. Virtualization helped  BMW minimize its physical server fleet and improve system manageability. Now BMW expects to reduce energy use by 20 percent. Virtualizing the environment on Intel® architecture will let the company consolidate servers by 30:1. Plus, with better system and application performance the business and development teams can get results sooner and speed time to market.“We’re confident that with our new Intel® technology-based platform we will overachieve against the goals we have set ourselves in terms of business performance and energy efficiency,” said Axel-Knut Bethkenhagen, head of corporate license management for BMW Group. For all the details, read our new BMW Group business success story. Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal joins Pune Warriors

first_imgIn-form Bangladeshi opener Tamim Iqbal on Thursday signed a one-year contract worth $50,000 with the Pune Warriors India to play in the Indian Premier League, completing the franchise’s line-up.Tamim’s deal comes a day after Australia captain Michael Clarke signed a contract for the team owned by Sahara Adventure Sports Ltd., which is owned by Sahara India.Tamim, 23, was among the long list of players who went unsold at the February 4 auction in Bangalore. But the grant of an extra foreign player’s berth by the BCCI in exceptional circumstances provided an opportunity to Sahara India to sign Clarke and Tamim after Yuvraj Singh (cancer) and Australian James Hopes (knee injury) were ruled out of the 54-day IPL beginning on April 4.Although there was no official statement either from Sahara India or the BCCI on Tamim’s deal, a top Sahara official confirmed the signing.”We have signed Tamim at his basic auction price of $50,000 for one year. It’s a one-year-plus-one deal, meaning that we will have the first right to retain him or release him after this year’s tournament,” the official told Mail Today.Unlike Clarke and West Indies’s Marlon Samuels, Tamim is expected to be available for the entire tournament since Bangladesh have, as of now, no international engagements between April 4 and May 27. Tamim’s deal was delayed as he went on a holiday to Malaysia after the Asia Cup ended on March 22 and signed the contract papers immediately on return to Dhaka on Wednesday. After signing the contract papers he said that he was not setting any goal in the IPL, but that he would “play with my heart”.advertisementTamim represents Victoria Club and is one of the highest paid players in the local league. He reportedly gets between Taka 35 lakh (`22 lakh) and 40 lakh (`25 lakh-plus) for a season. It’s not surprising, therefore, that he wants to play the April 3 match for his club, which is chasing the title, before leaving for India.last_img
