‘No secret’ to Leicester’s rise, says Thai boss Top

PHOTO/AFP.BANGKOK, April 25 – Leicester City’s Thai vice-chairman insisted there was no secret to their miraculous rise after they inched closer to a previously unthinkable English Premier League title.Hundreds of blue-shirted Thai fans watched Leicester’s 4-0 win over Swansea City live on big screens late into the night at an outdoor venue in Bangkok as the Foxes opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the table. Afterwards Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, who is also chief executive of Thailand’s King Power duty-free empire, said Leicester’s rise is “very good for football and for people who love sport”.“I play sport as well and I understand that inspiration from (striker Jamie) Vardy, inspiration from Leicester has inspired everyone in the world,” he said, in rare comments to media.“We don’t have a secret… the players… are trying so hard, and the spirit in the team is so good.”Top’s publicity-shy father Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha owns the British club, but Top is hands on in running it as well as being the King Power CEO.Leicester only narrowly survived relegation last year but Claudio Ranieri’s side have taken this season by storm with their high-energy, attack-minded approach.Leicester’s Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez became the first African to be named England’s Professional Footballer’s Association player of the year on Sunday, while the prolific Vardy has netted 22 times.The Foxes, or ‘Siamese Foxes’, are now beginning to attract fans in Thailand, where English Premier League giants Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea traditionally command a strong following.“We have 600 people come to celebrate and enjoy to watch Leicester, the team that maybe seven years ago no one knew,” said Top.“We try to tell Thais that you have your team and you have your second team as Leicester, so every time Leicester play please support.”– Beer and karma –Free beer helped draw the crowd but there was no mistaking the enthusiasm as two goals from Leonardo Ulloa, and one each from Mahrez and Marc Albrighton pushed Leicester closer to the trophy.“We’ll be champions no problem,” enthused Auawut Job, 42, who like many Thais professed to being a new convert to Leicester mania.“I was a Liverpool fan until three years ago, but Liverpool have gone down… all Thais will support Leicester if they win the league,” he added.The Srivaddhanaprabha family have been widely praised for their judicious spending and appointments, which have taken Leicester to the top of the Premier League.Top was a key voice in Ranieri’s hiring and that of former boss Nigel Pearson, who left in the close-season despite a remarkable run of games to survive relegation.The departure came shortly after a sex tape scandal involving three young fringe players including Pearson’s son during a summer tour of Bangkok.The mystery of Leicester’s rise is whether it has been case of luck or canny judgement or both on the part of the owners.Thai Buddhist monks certainly think good karma helps after they were drafted in to bless the King Power Stadium pitch and hand out lucky talismans to players.Top said of his father: “He’s a successful businessman and he tried to challenge himself to get something done.“This is one thing that in his dreams he wanted to own the club, and he said I think two or three years before that he want the team to be a success in the Premier League, and now we are.”He added: “As a son, I try to make the father and boss happy.” 0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

DisneyQuest to Close for The NBA Experience

first_imgShare This!©Rikki NiblettAlmost a year and a half ago, Disney announced that the NBA Experience would be making its way to Disney Springs and that DisneyQuest would be closing to make way for this new one-of-a-kind destination. Then…we heard nothing. Not a peep. I honestly thought the idea was dead.That is until today when Disney announced that they would indeed still be going forward with The NBA Experience and that DisneyQuest had a date when it would officially close for good. DisneyQuest, located on The West Side, will officially close on July 3. Leading up to its closure, the indoor theme park will still operate as usual, offering classic arcade games and unique interactive experiences, such as Buzz Lightyear’s AstroBlasters and CyberSpace Mountain.As far as The NBA Experience is concerned, not much is known about what the basketball-themed complex will offer. We do know that it will feature hands-on activities that put guests right in the middle of the NBA action, and will create an immersive experience of both the game and its players. SATURDAY SIX THANKSGIVING SPECIAL: Six Reasons for Theme Park Fans to Give Thanks in 2019

first_img# 5 –  Epcot ForeverEpcot Forever is a jukebox musical for fans of classic Epcot, with music clips representing the park’s attractions from the years 1982 – 2005. Like most Disney nighttime shows, the soundtrack is combined with fireworks and other visual effects, all staged above Epcot’s World Showcase lagoon.If you have fond memories of this era of Epcot attractions, Epcot Forever is a mostly pleasant trip back in time. The soundtrack includes samples of everything from the original Epcot entrance music, Spaceship Earth’s Tomorrow’s Child, and the Tapestry of Nations parade. On the other hand, first-time Epcot guests might wonder what the song “Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit” has to do with anything they saw in today’s Epcot. (There’s enough of a connection to the Living with the Land boat ride to make sense, although that’s not where the song originated.)The music is accompanied by a good selection of colorful fireworks and lasers. A new visual effect uses illuminated kites, pulled by jet skis around the lagoon, to enhance the show. The kites change colors as the music changes, and even spout fireworks at one point. If you’re looking at online video of the show, note that this effect looks much better in person.The show has its faults: The use of child narrators infantilizes Epcot’s original purpose of celebrating imagination, enterprise, science, and technology. And the inclusion of “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin is the kind of corporate shilling that the original Epcot Center specifically resisted. Still, as a temporary show, and one that’s replacing the classic IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, Epcot Forever‘s visual effects alone make the show worth staying for.Epcot Forever as seen from the Japan Pavilion. (photo by Blog Mickey) # 1 – Star Wars: Galaxy’s EdgeWhether it was the jaw-dropping moment of seeing the Millenium Falcon in person, the intimate experience of building your own lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop, listening to DJ-Rex at Oga’s Cantina, or getting the coolest looking Coke bottle ever made, the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge brought a smile to the face of many Star Wars fans. The planet of Batuu rock work is among the best Disney has ever done, giving a sense of true awe when walking around the land. Ronto Wraps immediately became one of our favorite food items in all of WDW, while the dining experience at Docking Bay 7 reminded us of the great Satu’li Canteen in Pandora: The World of Avatar.We are mere days away from Rise of the Resistance opening in Florida. The addition of this game changing attraction will help make Galaxy’s Edge one of the most memorable lands in all of Walt Disney World.The Millenium Falcon. Death Eaters are joined by evil creatures like Dementors and misunderstood ones like Thestrals, punctuated, of course, by the Dark Lord himself, Voldemort. While it’s always good to see a little attention paid towards “the bad guys,” the Dark Arts show’s biggest strength is the introduction of walk around Death Eaters to the Universal Orlando Resort. There are plenty of rides themed to Sesame Street characters, a new parade, and a whole bunch of interactive elements to keep the young ones in your family busy. Adults young at heart will appreciate the great jokes throughout the land and a chance to take a picture with the characters we grew up with. (photo by Tessa Koten) Share This!This week’s SATURDAY SIX is our annual Thanksgiving Special and takes a look at Six Reasons for Theme Park Fans to Give Thanks. 2019 was another “transition” year in the Florida theme park Universe, with Disney still lining up pegs for Magic Kingdom’s 50th anniversary in 2021, and Universal prepares for its third official theme park.  As is our tradition in this fine blog series, this Thanksgiving we are going to take a quick break from all the turkey, football games, and Black Friday pre-planning to count our blessings and thank the parks and resorts that we love so much. So, for one day only, we ask that all Disney and Universal fans put aside their differences and spend a brief moment appreciating all the wonderful things that we can share together, starting with…# 6 – The Disney SkylinerOne accident unexpected downtime aside, the Disney Skyliner is a wonderful addition to Walt Disney World. People love staying at the “monorail resorts,” and now we have “Skyliner resorts” with Caribbean Beach, Pop Century, and Art of Animation. Kids are going to love the fun wraps on many of the Skyliner gondolas, featuring a wide variety of Disney characters and brands. Adults are going to enjoy the birds-eye look at Disney property.It’s truly amazing the wide variety of transportation options guests have to experience when at the Vacation Kingdom. Monorails, boats, buses, Minnie vans, the Skyliner, and even horse-drawn carriage rides at some resorts! One nice surprise for us Disneyana collectors was the amount of really good Skyliner merchandise that arrived with the gondolas. Outside of the awesome monorail toy set, merchandise for Disney transportation vehicles is pretty weak. However the Skyliner came with a great selection of items; with t-shirts, buttons, and toys, including a Funko Pop.Disney Skyliner passes by Pop Century. Gran Destino Tower is almost shocking to see when you turn into Coronado Springs for the first time. The good news is that Gran Destino is loaded with amenities, including a roof top bar and a club level lounge with incredible views of Walt Disney World property.Gran Destino Tower. Part of the Endless Summer Resort, Surfside will be joined by Dockside Inn and Suites in 2020. Surfside brings the option of staying at a Universal hotel to guests who before would stay at hotels on I-Drive to save money. Just minutes away from CityWalk via a dedicated bus, Surfside offers the early access to Universal parks (including Volcano Bay) that can be a huge asset when touring. (photo by Michael Carelli) # 2 – Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike AdventureIn years past, one big difference between Universal and Disney was how well themed WDW was within lands while Uni was more a “collection of stuff.” In the past few years alone Universal has made major strides in making their parks more cohesive, whether it be Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon in the New York section at Universal Studios Florida, or Hagrid’s in Hogsmeade Village. As good as a ride as it was, Dragon Challenge stood out like a sore thumb in Hogsmeade. Hagrid’s fixes that in a major way and possibly makes Hogsmeade pound for pound the best overall land in any Florida theme park, and that includes WDW.Now, for the attraction itself. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is a high-speed roller coaster ride through the Forbidden Forest. Guests will experience a twisty, turvey coaster experience that replicates the motions of a flying motorbike. The ride elements and sensations are unlike any coaster in Orlando.Guests are students in the Care of Magical Creatures class, taught by the friendly Hogwarts Keeper of Keys, Rubeus Hagrid. Hagrid commandeered the forgotten buildings of Hogwarts for the breeding and storage of his magical creatures. Here Hagrid experiments to create a new beast, the blast-ended skrewt, and wants to take us on a field trip to observe them.During the preshow we find Hagrid also roped in Arthur Weasley to assist us with travel. Arthur gives the iconic Sirius Black motorbike a full Pimp My Ride treatment. Full repairs? Check. Dragon breath boost? Check. Geminio spell to make dozens of copies? Check. After market DVD play and plasma TV? Ok, not that much. After a quick spell by Hagrid we are soon on our way.On the way to board, guests see fairy nests, laboratories, and an assortment of magical eggs. Thankfully Universal reworked large portions of the old Dragon Challenge queue, significantly shortening a half-marathon length queue. Like Forbidden Journey and Hollywood Rip Ride Rock-It guests board the ride vehicles on a moving walkway. Guests riding the motorbike stand on the right-hand side while boarding and the guests in the side-car on the left.Once strapped in Hagrid quickly puts the pedal to the metal, blasting out of the thestrals stables and into our first launch. What differentiates this coaster from others is how the ride sensation feels like guests are actually riding a flying motorbike. The ride vehicle bucks, drops, and turns like its driven by a lead-footed teen learning how to drive a manual transmission. Yet unlike a driving instructor you will be thrilled as you experience what coaster-heads call lateral forces and negative g-forces (airtime).While on your class trip guests will fly through ancient ruins, past the giant three-headed dog Fluffy, and stall mid-air before falling backwards. While trying to recover from stalling out guests find themselves in the Forbidden Forest where devil snare entangles their bikes. A quick spell loosens the plant’s grip and guests free-fall 17 feet to safety. If you feel like a confundus charm was cast on you after this description, it means guests should hold on and experience the wildest ride in Scotland.Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure is a dragon-breath blast of a ride from start to finish, and is the most unique rollercoaster in Orlando. The ride sensations of flying through a forest combined with amazing set pieces make this a top five ride at Universal, and possibly THE best ride for many.Hagrid. A New Kind of Stress

first_imgThe recession is taking its toll not only on businesses and unemployed Americans—it’s also affecting the employees still reporting to work, day in and day out. In fact, the stresses have grown so great that workers are starting crack under the pressure. Employees are reporting thoughts of suicide, violence against co-workers and mental breakdowns at the highest rates seen in three years, according to Harris, Rothenberg International (HRI), a provider of employee assistance program (EAP) services. As companies try to do more with fewer workers, employees are stretching themselves thin to meet the demands at the workplace, with their families and for themselves, said Julie LeBlanc, HRI’s associate director of clinical services, in an interviewwith SHRM Online. “This is a new kind of stress. Before, when people were worried, they could take time off. Now they are scared of losing their jobs and can’t take off,” LeBlanc said. “They are not taking vacations, they are always in the office, they aren’t taking lunch. People try to ‘white-knuckle’ it through, and then one stressor too many happens and they fall apart. When work/life balance is not a priority, HRI said in a press statement, employees skimp on sleep, exercise, therapy and family time—to their extreme detriment. “Employees don’t realize why they are stressed and they forget about self care,” LeBlanc told SHRM Online. “Think it through—take a 30-minute lunch break by yourself, walk around the building, eat and sleep well. Don’t use substances [such as alcohol or drugs]. Drink enough water. People don’t think of those things, but you can only do this so long before your body gives out.” Supervisors, too, need to be in tune with their employees’ needs. Follow these tips from HRI to help spot and address worrisome employee behavior: *Address concerning behaviors you see in employees early on, linking them to mental health resources like their EAP and to work/life programs. *Encourage the use of your company’s time off and sick leave policies, as well as other benefits that will help the wellness of employees. *Train mangers on recognizing the signs of mental health and substance abuse distress, and give them tools for helping their direct reports. *Offer mental health screenings in employee health and benefits fairs. *Incorporate wellness, resilience and morale-enhancing events into the workplace, such as social gatherings, teambuilding exercises, and yoga/fitness/nutrition clubs or services. *Promote company benefits often so employees make use of the resources available to them. “It’s All Cool”—Starting Loss Prevention for a Hot Brand at Oakley Retail Stores

first_imgA conversation with Maggie Newton is fast moving, informative, fun, and asymmetric. Upon reflection, this is not surprising, because it seems to mirror what her employer, Oakley, Inc., is all about, and why it is so remarkably successful. It’s also why Newton’s loss prevention program for Oakley’s retail stores is so successful.“Oakley is an innovative place. It is all about risk taking,” Newton explains. “There are a lot of young and highly motivated people here. There are also people who have been here for many years. They have huge product knowledge and true love of the company. We have never had a lot of turnover. People are not here just because of money. We are all fanatics who believe in the company.”The building of the loss prevention program for Oakley retail stores is the story of Newton’s energetic and common-sense approach to this unique challenge—How to institute LP into a “cool” retail company that is going 150 mph at all times and that has one of the strongest and most distinct company cultures in retail industry.- Sponsor – “I Knew How to Observe Behavior.”Maggie Newton brought a customer perspective to her job at Oakley. “Before I worked at Oakley, I was already a customer of their goggles for skiing and board shorts for surfing, but I did not know anything about the company’s culture or what it did with loss prevention,” she explains. “When I did interview with Oakley, it sounded like the right position for me at the right company. I felt my background was well-rounded enough to take on the position they described; that is, joining a fast-growing, high-energy company and building an LP from the ground up.”Newton was not coming to Oakley with a lofty pedigree of heading up large retail loss prevention programs. Instead, for almost fifteen years, she had worked on the LP battlefield, learning the craft and the profession on the frontlines.Newton grew up in and around Orange County, California. Her college education was at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, with the initial idea of a career in merchandising. But in 1994, after a brief part-time stint of serving subpoenas, she took a position as store detective with JCPenney. “Our on-the-job training was about observing people’s behavior. I was good at it and usually caught at least one shoplifter every day.”Newton eventually abandoned thoughts about a career in merchandising and moved through the LP store and district ranks at T.J. Maxx and Loehmann’s. She became a district LP auditor for Stein Mart. Then Oakley spotted her resume posted on Monster.com and called her in for an interview. It was love at first sight for Newton.“I loved what I was doing and had always wanted to keep adding to my knowledge. I believed that I was ready to lead the LP retail store program for Oakley.”Building LP at Oakley Retail StoresEven though Newton is a native of southern California and grew up in its often exaggerated “sand and surf” environment, nothing quite prepared her for Oakley. Newton vividly recalls her first visit to Oakley’s headquarters in Foothill Ranch, California. “It’s an awesome building. It’s a huge concrete and stainless steel grey fortress and there is a torpedo-shaped sculpture in front of the main entrance.”Over its 35 years, Oakley has become a powerful global brand known for its high-tech products and high-profile sports marketing and distribution. However, it has been in the direct retail business for less than a decade. When Newton joined Oakley in 2006, it already had almost fifty stores, including its Oakley Stores and Oakley Vaults, all of which were located along the coastal areas of the U.S. With the Oakley brand already well established and its products distributed through leading retailers worldwide, Oakley’s own retail locations immediately enjoyed explosive growth. It experienced the growing pains as well.“Every department was inventing itself as the retail division took off. Our store managers were just focused on serving the customers and the department managers were just focused on building their departments to meet the demands of the stores. It seemed like it was semi-controlled chaos for awhile,” Newton says.Not surprising, loss prevention was a big issue. As anyone with an eye for brand-name, designer eyewear appreciates, Oakley products are always in demand and at a premium price. “Even with an extensive loss prevention program, any store with merchandise like ours would be susceptible to internal and external loss,” said Newton.Taking a methodical, deliberate, approach during the first six months after she arrived at Oakley, Newton developed the building blocks of a loss prevention program for the Oakley retail division, which was adding stores at a fast clip.First, she developed a set of audit logs that applied an audit discipline to a store’s daily operations. The new audits also addressed many of the internal control issues raised in Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.Second, Newton contributed to the Oakley retail store division’s policy and procedures manual by developing an official loss prevention policy. The policies and procedures highlighted in the manual provided guidance on how store managers deal with local alarm, security officer providers, armored car services, and with the security departments at the malls where most of the Oakley shops are located.The third building block of Newton’s master plan was training. “As I developed each audit log and section of the policies and procedures covering that log, I worked with our training department to make sure that we had a training module ready to roll out. We could not just announce new reports and policies without also making sure that everyone understood the purposes behind the new requirements and were trained in how to use a specific audit.”Designing Stores, Service, and LP around the CustomerEven during Newton’s relatively brief tenure at Oakley, she has had to adapt the fledgling LP program to radical changes in Oakley’s store layout and merchandising approaches. “With Oakley’s initial start-up, the stores took a simple approach to serving customers. A staff member greeted a customer and stayed with the customer until the customer completed a purchase or left the store,” she explains.“At most of the stores there were just two walls of merchandise, with no center aisle racks. Originally, we had locked displays, so the associate unlocked and removed the merchandise from the cases. This system was effective only to a point. At peak periods, it became difficult for associates to provide the amount of attention they wanted to provide.”When the stores moved to open merchandise displays and gradually added a two-sided middle aisle rack, so that many of the stores now had four racks of display shelves, the challenge of service and LP became even more daunting. “We developed a new customer service procedure and training that uses a zone system. Staff members are assigned to zones and associates are assigned as ‘designated ringers’ to cash registers and switch off with the associates zoned on the sales floor when it gets busy. They are trained to handle multiple customers at the same time, by positioning their bodies to face all the customers in their assigned zones. If they get called over to another zone in the store, they switch zones with an associate or a designated ringer. It’s similar to how a soccer team passes the ball around during a game…teamwork. They especially focus on customers that exhibit ‘alert signals’ for abnormal behavior. Face the customer at all times and interact with the customer as much as possible.”Newton adds, “We teach our associates the art of observing suspicious behavior. We teach them to interact with customers to the fullest extent possible and to call mall security or the local police department if there is an incident.”Supporting Oakley’s Retail GrowthNewton says that Oakley’s retail store LP program is still a work in progress. Right now, she is still officially a department of one, her title is still officially “loss prevention auditor,” and she reports directly to the director of operations of the stores organization.Newton says her greatest personal focus and source of satisfaction is working with the store managers. “Our goal is to train the store managers to be their own LP departments. The tools and procedures are there to help them fulfill that aspect of their responsibility. We want them to be fully empowered to handle LP in their stores, particularly to train their store sales associates on how to observe behaviors and circumvent incidents. In that way, LP becomes one of many tools the managers can use to drive their stores’ growth. Our most successful stores tend to be the ones with managers who take LP personally and spend time training their people.”The Oakley retail store LP program is streamlined, in a sense, just like its approach to merchandising—simple, direct, sleek. LP is a major topic on the agenda at quarterly meetings of the store managers. The stores division keeps a list of “intensive care” stores…not a list that store managers want to see their store appear on. These are high-loss stores that command Newton’s attention. “We look at the logs from the intensive care stores to spot the trouble areas. We move quickly to help those managers address them. We usually see positive results right away. This is not rocket science.”Walking the Talk about Empowerment and InnovationIt is clear that empowerment is one of Oakley’s core values. The extensive patents for technology and design that its product developers have produced over the past decades are testimony to the company’s commitment to challenging its people to innovate.Newton herself has caught the innovative spirit. Later this year, Oakley retail stores expect to start phasing in new LP initiatives. However, Newton will not prognosticate about the future of Oakley’s LP program. The company today has nearly 150 stores, triple the number from when Newton joined. “We’re still in analysis mode and at the same time we’re part of the team effort to grow the company. LP is now better understood and there are definitely positive results. So far, we know that LP can fit into our company culture. After all, we love our products and our customers. first_imgSpending globally on IoT security is expected to reach $1.5 billion this year as organization worry about the vulnerability of their IoT connected devices, an increase of 28 percent over 2017, says Gartner.The Garner report found that about one-fifth of all organization say that they’ve experience some sort of IoT-based attack over the last thirty-six months.Brian Contos, CISO of Verodin, said that “there are so many IoT device types and vendors that it’s challenging to determine what risks they bring and what levels of controls can be implemented to mitigate that risk.”Ruggero Contu, research director at Gartner, said that “interest is growing in improving automation in operational processes through the deployment of intelligent connected devices, such as sensors, robots and remote connectivity, often through cloud-based services. Alex Russel who works for the Chrome team and has a lot of insights into the current state of the web says that using too much JavaScript or using it exclusively (without progressive enhancement/graceful degradation) will have the same effect as too much CO2 for the ecosystem on planet Earth — the ecosystem will fall apart. And just like we need a certain amount of CO2 to live, we need JavaScript on the web. It’s that fine line that makes the difference — the line between not too much and none at all.I feel that with the native browser APIs that we have these days we have a fantastic opportunity to build great web services without bloating them too much and without relying only on JavaScript. We can enhance native elements with the Custom Elements API easily via ES6 Classes, with so little code that it seems ridiculous to build all that on your own in a third-party framework. Coincidentally, the Github engineering team published an article about how they dropped jQuery entirely and what they now use instead: native JavaScript and small, lean code that is progressively enhancing their platform. Less code, better maintainability, and more stability.NewsChrome 70 is now in beta, bringing shape detection as an origin trial that allows us to perform QR code reading, face detection, and text recognition in images. The Web Authentication API got some updates, too, and referrerpolicy support was added to elements. This version will also deprecate Custom Elements v0, HTML Imports, and Shadow DOM v0.Finally, with Firefox 62, Mozilla ships ::selection instead of :-moz-selection. They also implemented flat(), and flatMap() for JavaScript arrays and developers get a new Shape Path Editor.Chrome 69 is out and brings us CSS Scroll Snap Points, the CSS viewport-fit property for cutout-displays like the one of iPhone X, and the Web Locks API which allows scripts running in one tab or worker to asynchronously acquire a lock, hold it while work is performed, and then release it. Unfortunately, this release changed how the browser displays the URL, and it seems that people consider it a security bug. However, the entire topic (which comes up way more often lately) shows that more and more people think about the impact of their work. They don’t want it to be used for bad, but for good. And while the idea of open, non-restricted source is desirable, it’s only if people use it to support human rights and for improving lives. I’m curious about new solutions that could ensure this; maybe we’ll see more terms of service for open-source projects soon (which would then be legally binding but may prevent free open-source projects from using them).
